You can adjust the volume of the music by adjusting the MUSIC volume slider found in the options menu screen.
To turn the sound effects off, slide the SFX volume slider completely to the left to adjust the volume of sound effects.
If you wish to turn down both the music and sound effects, move the MASTER VOLUME slider to the left until you see the number next to the slider read zero (0).
