You can try using the Pickaxe on the crack from different angles or positions. The crack must be highlighted for the Pickaxe to work — if it isn't highlighted, the interaction won't register.
I can't use the royal pickaxe to widen the crack in the wall while progressing the "Interlude 3: The Shadowy Surprise" quest.
