You are allowed to purchase an item until you own 5 copies of that item. Subsequent purchases are temporarily suspended until you have less than 5 copies of that item.

Note that there are no restrictions on your inventory size. You may acquire additional item capacity from the Slot Machine, enabling you to possess, for instance, up to 6 copies.
